This is the largest driver and the one clients control most easily.","**The physics.** Steady, single-phase, incompressible flow is the cheap end. Heat transfer through solid walls adds a coupled problem. Transient behaviour means thousands of time steps. Multiphase flow needs fine meshes at interfaces, and combustion adds species, reactions and usually radiation.","**The state of the geometry.** A clean, watertight CAD model of the fluid volume can be meshed the same day. A manufacturing assembly with bolts, gaskets and overlapping surfaces can take longer to clean than the simulation takes to run.","**Size and resolution.** A long tube bundle, a full furnace or a room with small diffusers needs many cells. Where symmetry or a representative section is defensible, the cost falls sharply.","**How much checking you need.** A quick comparison needs a sensitivity check. A result that will be defended in front of a customer or a design review needs a mesh study, documented balances and, where data exist, a comparison with measurements.","**What is delivered.** A summary with the key plots costs less to write than a full report with methodology, assumptions and limitations.
